Maybe you’ve gotten one of those dreaded emails from the school. Or maybe you were brushing your child’s hair one morning, noticed her scratching the same spot, and spotted it: a louse. Are you worried your family’s about to get hit with a relentless wave of head lice? Or are you worried because you don’t know who it may have already been spread to?

Schools in Wake County, including Cary and Chapel Hill do not hold to strict ��no nit” policies for head lice. Children with nits may remain in school. At the end of the school day, the child should be sent home for lice treatment.

Schools in Racine do not restrict school attendance for the presence of lice eggs or nits. They follow the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses

Both Oak Park and Berwyn schools no longer have “no nit” policies in place. Oak Park’s exception to this is that if a child has nits (lice eggs) and the case continues to get worse, the child may be sent home.

Schools in these districts have dropped their “no nit” school lice policies. Children will not be automatically sent home if nits are found. This is based on research from and recommendations by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of School Nurses, the American School Health Association, and the Harvard School of Public Health.

Schools in Copperas Cove and Fort Hood have abandoned “no nit” policies for outbreaks of head lice in the school. Children with lice eggs will be allowed to remain in school, but children with live bugs will be sent home.

Clarksville school do not specify whether they adhere to no-nit policies, but students will be checked prior to re-admission to school.

Schools in Pflugerville and Jollyville do not adhere to strict “no nit” policies regarding head lice. Infested students can be treated at home and return to school without missing valuable class time.

Talking about head lice can be a double-edged sword. The lice are passed along mysteriously, their origins unannounced, and their unwanted arrival unexpected.
