It is up to each school district to formulate its own lice policy. Some schools have moved toward more lenient policies permitting student with nits and even lice to remain in schools. Other districts have elected to maintain absolute "no nit" policies.

St. Louis, LaDue, Kirkland, and Clayton Missouri Public School Districts have all adopted the current policy of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that “children should not be excluded or sent home early from school because of head lice or nits."

Lice Policy Rochester, New York Public Schools and Surrounding Areas Despite the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that schools allow students with lice to attend, schools in the Rochester areas have their own lice policies, which differ from district to district.

Per the Kansas Department of Education website, it is recommended that Kansas schools drop “no nit” policies, which prohibit children with lice eggs from entering school. The recommendation is based on advice from the Centers for Disease Control, American Association of Pediatrics, and the National Association of School Nurses.

Little Rock schools have dropped their "no nit" policies, but do not allow students to remain in school with live bugs.

The Kansas Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics recently changed its policy regarding admission to the school. It is no longer mandatory for children to be "nit-free" in order to be admitted back into school.

Whereas many school districts across the country are moving away from “no nit” school lice policies, some schools in the Panhandle region of Florida retain “no nit” policies.
