You have two choices when you find head lice, which one will you make?

It’s a Tuesday night. You had a long day at work and are trying to cook dinner while the kids are running through the house. Let’s face it- it’s utter chaos and you can’t wait until 9 o’clock hits, and the house is quiet, and you can finally catch up on Game of Thrones.

While the chicken is cooking and your spouse is recounting his day, you casually sift through your third-grader’s folder: an art picture, a few half-finished math sheets, a reminder about the PTA meeting coming up (shoot, another meeting already?), and then your eyes grow wide. Your heart starts to race as you read the dreaded words on the white half-sheet tucked inside the left pocket of the folder, “Your child may have been exposed to head lice.”

There are two ways this story may unfold. Read them both and then decide how, as a parent, you’d like to write your own story after you yourself find yourself stumbling upon that (once-dreaded) note.

Scenario A:

The panic consumes you. You turn off the stove, call your kids downstairs and begin to pull their strands of hair apart looking for any signs of bugs. Meanwhile, the thought of finding anything makes your skin crawl. As you pull the hairs apart searching for signs of lice, the kids are crying, your spouse is hovering over your shoulder, and you can’t tell the difference between dandruff and nits.panic button key on keyboard

Despite the fact that you can’t find anything definitive, you want to nip this in the bud and pull out your phone, searching “head lice treatment.” A slew of shampoos, chemicals, and combs comes up that convince you to hop in the car and head to the nearest drugstore—even though it is already 8 o’clock and bedtime routines are past their starting point.

By the time you get home and use the chemicals from the store on all three kids, it is past 10 o’clock, you are exhausted, and it’s looking like Game of Thrones will have to wait as your skin continues to crawl.

Then begins the vacuuming. The whole house must be vacuumed, including the couches, beds, carpets, rugs, animal beds, and pillows. All of the stuffed animals need to be bagged up- because that is what the internet says, and you can’t take any chances! All of the bedding needs to be washed, but only one of three sets can fit in the washer at a time. How long will three loads of laundry take at this hour?

Dinner is sitting cold on the stove, and will be there in the morning when you wake up, your skin still crawling as your paranoia continues to build and you inevitably spend the next three weeks cleaning and living in fear, and scratching your head.

Scenario B:

You read the note, and although you begin to panic, you know a fellow parent who has benefitted from LiceDoctors. You continue cooking dinner, because you know that these creepy crawlies soon will be a thing of the past. An exposure to head lice does not mean that your child brought it home. You do not clean your entire house, because you know that head lice can not live off the head for more than 48 hours on their own and will not re-infest a head while a proper treatment regimen is being followed.

You finish dinner, feed the kids, get them into bed and call LiceDoctors. You then sit back to watch Game of Thrones.

A technician comes to your home the next day, treats your family without the use of harmful chemicals, shows you how to identify lice and nits, and most importantly calms your nerves. With the help of LiceDoctors, the next time you get that note in your child’s folder home, you will be relaxed, armed with the confidence that LiceDoctors will come to your house and take care of the lice problem. Bye, bye head lice! Oh, and given that the chemicals often don’t work because the lice have become resistant, Scenario B may even cost less than Scenario A!
