The honest answer: not much. Here's what actually helps.
What the Technician Brings
Your LiceDoctors technician arrives with everything she needs to complete the treatment. That includes her professional-grade headlamp, the Terminator Comb for systematic combing, olive oil for the treatment application, and everything else required for the full six-step process. You don't need to have any supplies on hand before she arrives.
What Actually Helps
A room with good lighting. The technician uses a headlamp, but a room with natural light or a good lamp nearby helps. A kitchen or living room typically works well. A dark bedroom is harder to work in.
A comfortable chair. The person being treated will be sitting for a while. A chair with a straight back and no armrests works better than a couch or a chair with sides that get in the way.
Have everyone home. If multiple people in the household need to be checked or treated, having them all present when the technician arrives means the visit moves efficiently instead of waiting for someone to come home mid-appointment.
Hair that isn't freshly conditioned or styled. The technician applies oil as part of the treatment, so no need to wash or prep the hair beforehand. Hair that's dry and hasn't had heavy products put in it that morning is fine.
What You Don't Need to Do
You don't need to strip the beds, bag the stuffed animals, or vacuum the house before the technician arrives. The CDC notes that lice don't survive long off a human host, and household cleaning isn't a prerequisite for treatment. The technician's focus is on the people in the household, not the environment.
You also don't need to apply any product to the hair before the appointment. Some parents try an OTC treatment before the technician arrives — this doesn't help and can make the combing process messier. Leave the hair as-is and let the technician handle it from scratch.
The Day of the Visit
LiceDoctors operates 7am to midnight, 7 days a week. The technician arrives in an unmarked car. She'll introduce herself, ask a few quick questions about the situation, and get started. The whole process is calm and matter-of-fact — she does this every day, and she's seen every kind of case.
Before she leaves, she'll go over the aftercare instructions: what to wash, what to bag, and what to do for follow-up comb-throughs in the days after the visit. That's all explained in person, so you don't need to memorize anything beforehand.
What to Have Ready for After
Once the treatment is done, you'll want to start on the household steps your technician outlines. Having a washing machine clear and ready to run bedding and recently worn clothing on high heat is useful.
