Hollywood School District

Students in Hollywood, Florida are not permitted to enter school if they have an active case of head lice. Children with nits should remain home as the school maintains a “no nit” policy.

Excused Absences

Students must be in school unless the absence has been permitted or excused for one of the reasons listed below (F.S. 1003.24(4), 1003.26)…..

8. Students having, or suspected of having, a communicable disease or infestation which can be transmitted are to be excluded from school and are not allowed to return to school until they no longer present a health hazard (F.S. 1003.22). Examples of communicable diseases and infestations include, but are not limited to, fleas, head lice, ringworm, impetigo and scabies. Students are allowed a maximum of five excused days absence for each infestation of head lice.”

The Hollywood lice policy goes against the trend of school lice policies in this country. Major medical organizations such as the American Association of Pediatrics and the National School Nurses Association advise schools to allow children with nits to remain in school, as they claim that nits are not contagious. There is controversy on this and those who support “no nit” policies ague that allowing children with nits into school increases the risk of transmission, after the nits hatch.

EXPOSED TO LICE? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR LICE TO BE VISIBLE?

We are frequently asked how long it takes after you have been in contact with a person who has head lice for the lice or eggs to appear in your hair. See our answer below: It Varies from Person to Person and Case to Case If you are looking for eggs (nits) in the hair, that will usually take about a week until they are visible. The louse may lay eggs immediately upon arrival in the hair, but those eggs will be microscopic for a few days. If the louse is in the hair for a few days before it starts to lay eggs, then it will take longer until the eggs are visible.
