A Louse By Any Other Name… Is Still A Louse

A Louse By Any Other Name… Is Still A Louse

Head lice give us the creeps and carry negative connotations. Lice technician Margaret counters these misconceptions below:

A head louse (pediculus humanus capitis) is very simply a tiny sucking creature that lives on the human head and survives on human blood.  The problem is an infestation is never just one of these tiny bugs; it is a multitude of them that multiply quickly.  A lice infestation can get started and become excessive seemingly overnight.  It can be cleared up just as quickly as it can get started, so why does having a lice infestation give us humans such anxiety? Here are a few reasons that might attribute to the anxious feeling we all get when we hear about the dreaded louse.

  1. We associate lice with being

  1. dirty or living in a dirty environment.
The fact is that lice love a nice clean head, so not washing your hair or living in a dirty environment has nothing to do with it.
  2. The word “louse”, even in other definitions, has a negative connotation to it.
It is not uncommon to hear someone refer to another as a “louse”, meaning that they have no morals.
  3. Because of the misconceptions

  1. about lice, few people want to tell the people around them that they have a lice infestation.
The people whom we are closest to are the main ones who need to be informed, since head to head contact is the most common way that they are spread.

Lice infestations have always had a negative association where humans are concerned and perhaps that will never change.  Most of the parents I have checked in my career as a technician simply had a case of the heebie jeebies; in other words, that phantom itching that occurs when lice are merely mentioned.  These tiny bugs have the power to cause massive anxiety, but understanding why we feel that way helps to gives us humans back some power and dignity.
