Boston FAQs

Can you describe the appearance of lice?
Adult lice are about the size of a sesame seed, have 6 legs, no wings, and have a brownish color. They move very swiftly across the head so may be hard to see.
What do nits look like?
Nits range in size from microscopic when first laid to about the size of a sesame seed when mature. Nits are oval shaped with a narrow front and an antennNits have a translucent hard coating and a brown baby bug (nymph) inside. They are cemented to the hair approximately ¼ of an inch from the scalp.
How long does it take lice eggs to hatch?
Lice eggs take about 7-10 days to develop and hatch. Nits are not contagious; only live lice can be transmitted from one person to another.
Will lice medication kill lice and nits?
The first thing you should know is that no matter where you are in the Boston area, there are “super lice”. These are lice that are resistant to both prescription lice treatments and over- the-counter lice shampoos. In addition, no lice killing medication will pierce the shell of the nit. To get rid of lice and nits, you have to physically remove them and that requires expertise. That is where LiceDoctors comes in!
