How do you know if a nit is a nit? A nit is glued onto the hair at an angle. If you take your finger and slide it down the hair shaft, dandruff will slide right off. Another way to find out if a nit is really a nit, is to remove it and place it on a damp paper towel. A nit will appear black against a white background.

Some schools in Riverside County have a “no nit” policy, which prevents children from entering school until there is no sign of lice or eggs. Other schools leave it to the discretion of the nurse and allow children into the classroom as long as they are free of bugs.

Current recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses encourage schools to become more lenient regarding allowing children with “nits only” to remain in school.

Santa Barbara Unified School District Santa Barbara schools maintain the same lice policy as Oxnard schools, which allows students with active lice to remain in school until the end of the day and then then child must go home to be treated.
