West Palm Beach School Head Lice Policy

West Palm Beach School Head Lice Policy
Updated on
July 10, 2019

Schools in West Palm Beach are part of the Palm Beach County School District, and as such follow the district-wide “no nit” restrictions. This means children are not allowed to return to the classroom until the school nurse verifies that all live lice AND eggs have been removed.

PALM BEACH COUNTY

Response to Identified Infestations

The principal is responsible for ensuring that contact with the student's parent/guardian has been attempted and for excluding from school any student who is found to have lice or nits, as soon as is practically possible or at the end of the school day. All reasonable efforts will be made to prevent close contact of affected students with others until dismissal.

The principal will permit the re-admission of any students after they are determined to be free of lice or nits by the school nurse or assigned designee.

Persistent problems will be referred, by the school nurse or principal’s designee, to appropriate agencies for assistance.

Which Hair Types Are More Likely To Get Head Lice?

Here's the short answer: all types. Lice do not care what color or thickness your hair is, whether it has been dyed, or whether it is straight or curly. Lice only want to find a strand of hair to which they can attach so they can climb up to the scalp in order to get their food i.e. your blood.

Can Lice Eggs Reattach to the Hair if they Fall Off?

Lice eggs, also called nits, can not get back into the hair if they fall off. The only way to contract a case of head lice is for a louse to crawl into the hair. It is Highly Unlikely that Lice Eggs (Nits) will Fall off the Hair Nits are glued to the hair, therefore it is not typical for them to fall out. In fact, if you find a nit in the hair, you will see how challenging it is to remove it. You need to either use a comb that has tines that are close together or you need to squeeze your fingers around the nit and slide it down the hair strand.
