The Woodlands and Spring School Lice Policies

Most schools around The Woodlands and Spring will allow students back in school once they have begun treatment and no live lice are present.

Tomball Public Schools

Because lice spread so easily, the District will need to exclude any student found to have live lice until after one treatment of an FDA-approved shampoo or cream rinse. If careful observation indicates that a student has head lice, the school nurse will contact the student’s parent and inform the parent that the student will need to be picked up from school and will need to stay home until after an initial treatment is applied. After the student has undergone one treatment, the parent should check in with the school nurse to discuss the treatment used. The nurse can also offer additional recommendations, including subsequent treatments and how best to get rid of lice and prevent their return. Source: Tomball ISD Student Handbook (Page 61) 

Magnolia Public Schools

If a student has been identified as having live head lice, the parent will be contacted so treatment can begin. The student should be checked by the school nurse prior to reentry to ensure there are no live lice following treatment.

Conroe Independent School District

1. When a student is found to have live lice:
2. ​​​​The parent/guardian is notified and information related to detection and elimination of head lice will be provided.
3. The parent/guardian of student and school officials will determine if the student should be sent home.
4. The parent/guardian is instructed that the student should be treated before returning to school.
5. In some cases, (based on the School Nurses professional judgment), it may be appropriate to have the student’s head checked upon return to school.
6. When a student is found to have nits present (no live lice detected):
7. The parent/guardian is notified and encouraged to pick the nits from the student’s hair at least daily for the next two weeks.
8. The student is not sent home from school.
9. Information related to detection and elimination of head lice is sent home with the student.
