Schools in Wake County, including Cary and Chapel Hill do not hold to strict “no nit” policies for head lice. Children with nits may remain in school. At the end of the school day, the child should be sent home for lice treatment.

Head lice are small bugs that can get transmitted from head to head. Once they are on the scalp, they reproduce quickly, laying 6-10 eggs (nits) daily and often cause severe itching.

Research from the Harvard School of Epidemiology, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Association of School Nurses suggests there is no benefit to send children home if they only have nits. Children will be sent home if live lice are found. Nits are not contagious. Lice transmission occurs when live lice move from one head to another.

Schools in Chapel Hill no longer hold to strict “no nit” policies in general, but they may send a child home for treatment when live lice are found. If a child is sent home with live lice, he or she is expected to be treated that day and return to school the next day. If you attempt to treat your child at home on your own and the lice recur after two treatments, check in with the school nurse.

To be readmitted to school, the child has to be lice-free. If live lice are discovered the child will be sent home to be treated again.
