School Lice Policies

This district does not have a “no nit” policy. If a child has head lice, he or she will not be prevented from attending school. “What if my child has head lice?? If suspected, the School Nurse will exam a student and notify the parent/guardian of head lice if it has been identified. Students may be released from school at the discretion of the parent/guardian. Education and information will be provided for the treatment and prevention of head lice to parent/guardians. Students will not be excluded from school due to head lice. The Illinois Dept.

Quincy Public Schools Quincy schools have adopted a nuanced lice policy to protect the privacy of individual students. They have dropped the “no nit” policy. “Quincy Public Schools Guidelines to Head Lice Management The Guidelines to Head Lice Management in the Quincy Public Schools have been updated to reflect the position statement and standard practice of the National Association of School Nurses, the American School Health Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the Harvard School of Public Health.

Re-entry to school will be allowed once student is inspected by school health personnel and children will be permitted back in school even if they have nits, however the nurse will continue to check. If the case is not eliminated the school reserves the right to send the child home i.e. "A no nit policy may be instituted by the school nurse in the case of a persistent infestation or evidence of lack of compliance to this policy.
