Why Choose Us in Potomac?

Lice are nobody’s fault. There are many myths out there about how head lice are a result of poor hygiene, or crowded living situations, or even neglect. In our 20 years of experience and after successfully treating 500,000 children and parents, we can confidently say that:

  • Any human with hair on his or her head is at risk to catch head lice.
  • No amount of hair washing can prevent or remove head lice (in fact, frequently-washed hair is at a greater risk for catching lice)
  • No amount of house cleaning or laundering will prevent or remove head lice.

The one main thing head lice have going for their survival and proliferation is that nobody expects them. A case of head lice spreads much like a virus, passing unnoticed from child to child, inadvertently, and usually well before symptoms start. Many parents associate a case of head lice with excessive head scratching, but significant itching doesn’t usually become an issue until several weeks after first exposure. Even then, not everyone gets itchy from lice bites.

If you are unsure whether you have contracted lice or know that you have a case, a Potomac LiceDoctors lice specialist can make a house call to your family and use a tried and true lice treatment to eradicate your case.  No chemicals are used and all treatments are backed by a  30 day guarantee.

Your lice specialist will arrive at your door equipped and ready to relieve you of the annoyance of head lice. She will apply oil and methodically comb lice and eggs from the hair using a professional lice comb. She will nitpick any remaining nits (eggs) from the hair doing a thorough strand by strand check.  Expertise is essential; if you leave nits or bugs behind in the hair, untreated, you have not eliminated your lice problem.

Your Potomac LiceDoctors lice specialist will be at your home on your schedule. Our goal is to provide the most convenient, thorough, and expedient lice service available. We think you will agree that is the case after we treat you!

Pricing in Potomac

  • The first hour of service (including all travel fees up to 100 miles round trip) is $199 total.
  • Each hour after that will be $99/hour, prorated into 15 minute increments so you are only billed for the time your technician is there
  • Treatment time can vary depending upon the length/thickness/texture of the hair and the severity of the lice; our average time to treat a family of 4 is approximately 2.5 - 3 hours and the average cost is $300-$400.
  • LiceDoctors lice treatment is a lot less expensive than lice clinics in the area that charge over $750 to treat a family of 4.
  • Our treatment is most likely covered by your Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account.

Potomac FAQs

COULD THESE LICE BE “SUPER LICE?”
There is an increasing resistance among nearly all modern lice to commonly used chemical lice shampoos/pesticides. Today’s lice are so hearty as to be nicknamed “super lice.” Neither prescription lice medication nor OTC lice killing shampoos can be guaranteed to kill these lice. The best approach is to remove lice and nits by hand from the hair and that is what LiceDoctors in Potomac will do for you and your family.
WHY CHOOSE AN IN-HOME TREATMENT OVER A CLINIC?
Privacy and discretion are important to many Potomac parents, and your lice technician will arrive at your door in an unidentifiable vehicle with no company logos on their uniform. Instead of facing traffic only to wait around in a noisy clinic while each family member is treated, with in-home treatments each child can get back to play or homework as soon as he or she is cleared. Plus, in a clinic, anyone in your family who doesn’t have lice could potentially be exposed to many people who do. Why take the chance?
HOW MUCH SCHOOL WILL MY CHILD MISS DUE TO LICE?
Ideally, none. Potomac schools have a “no nit policy,” designed to stop the spread of lice by making it mandatory to treat children with any stage of lice (including nit-removal) before they return to class. This is exactly why your local lice technician is on-call evenings and weekends. If you call us as soon as the lice or nits are found, we can almost always offer same-day appointments in Potomac, and the next day everyone can return to school and normal activity with a certificate of treatment and no worries about being contagious. Call us anytime to speak to a friendly live dispatcher; we are here until midnight!

Client Testimonials

  • “I consider myself a very attentive mom so I was completely taken aback when I noticed my daughter scratching her head and looked in the hair and saw what looked to me to be hundreds of eggs. I still cannot figure out how I missed this until it got so advanced. There was no way that I was going to be able to get every single one of those eggs out of the hair so I went online and got the names of some lice companies. I called four of them and went with LiceDoctors. They come right to the home, had treated the most cases, and surprisingly had the lowest prices. Turns out it was an excellent decision. Everything went very smoothly and our wonderful technician was not at all overwhelmed by what faced her when she arrived. She got rid of the lice in my daughter, my son, and me. I will be forever grateful to them!” Alex N. in Potomac, Maryland

  • “My wife was away on business when I got the call from the school nurse. I had to rush out of work and pick up my daughter. Honestly, I had no idea what to do but she told me to call LiceDoctors. I followed her advice and Jamie, a lovely technician, came to the rescue. I love that they have technicians in other cities as my wife was able to get checked in Chicago where she was away on business. We are all clear thanks to the hard work of LiceDoctors!” Ron A. in Potomac, MD.

  • “Run don't walk to the phone and call LiceDoctors. As soon as I got them to come to my house, the aggravation that we had gone through for three weeks ended. Michele, our lice operator, knew exactly what to do to put an end to the torture of head lice. These people know what they are doing. Definitely a worthwhile service!” Joyce W. in Potomac, Maryland

Lice Vs. Dandruff: What Is the Difference?

downers grove lice eggs nits dandruff
By Lice Technician, Sean McGee Updated By Tierna Moser One of the hardest things for first time lice battling parents is telling the difference between nits (lice eggs) vs dandruff. However, it isn’t that hard once you know a few simple tricks.

School Policy

Potomac Public School Lice Policy

Potomac Schools maintain a “no nit” policy. Students with viable nits will be sent home from school. “A student is considered to have infestation with head lice if live lice and/or viable nits (those that are closer than ½ inch from the scalp) are observed. Students with infestation are excluded from school to obtain treatment with a pediculocide in order to prevent spreading lice to other students. Health care providers are a resource for treatment. Removal of nits located ½ inch or more from the scalp is recommended to avoid identification confusion.
