Are you experiencing a head lice outbreak at school? Perhaps you want to be proactive and prevent a problem with head lice and school? LiceDoctors will send specialists to your preschool or K-12 school, to provide a check of all of your students. Whether you have an outbreak mid-year or want a preventative check of head lice at back to school times (Aug/Sept or after school vacations), give LiceDoctors a call. We take the burden off of you so you can focus on what you do best!

School Head Lice Policy

Head lice and school policies vary among schools. Until recent years, schools held to “No Lice” policies. This meant that children would not be admitted to school with any signs of lice or eggs (nits).  Based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, many schools have revised their head lice at school policy, now permitting children with lice or nits to remain in class.

Schools, whether they have adopted the more lenient lice at school policy guidelines or not, do not want to have to deal with a widespread lice outbreak. Schools with more permissive lice policies are at higher risk of dealing with a major infestation. Young children are at the highest risk of contracting lice as they often play together in close contact and lice are spread through head to head contact.

LiceDoctors has worked with schools across the country to check and clear heads.  We do this with the utmost discretion to preserve the dignity of each child. Technicians are on call throughout the year to lend our expertise so that head lice do not become a burden for you or your students.

Your lice technicians will come to your school, equipped to check the students in a timely fashion.  Technicians bring their own supplies and know-how to identify any active head lice in school children.

The technicians will inspect each child’s head. They will divide the hair into sections so that they can see the bugs and nits; both head lice and nits camouflage in the hair making them difficult to find without the proper technique and expertise. Over two decades of experience contribute to our unmatched track record.  If we find nits on a head, we will show them to you as proof.

Treating teachers too
3

Children are not the only ones susceptible to head lice. Anyone with hair is a candidate so generally technicians also carefully screen teachers and other staff who are in contact with the children. As with our lice checks on children, your techs will do a section by section check on each head to ensure that no small nits or bugs are missed.

When a case is identified on a child or teacher, you have the option to treat on your own or have us discreetly administer a safe, thorough, and effective step-by-step lice treatment. Once the child has been treated by us, he or she can return to activities.

School Screening FAQ

How are lice spread in schools?

Head lice are spread when children are in close physical contact. Since younger children tend to have more group activities, they are prime candidates. Lice crawl from one head to another; they do not fly. It is highly unlikely that a person will contract lice from an inanimate object such as a chair, toy, or article of clothing.

Can a child go to school with head lice?

While we recommend that a child with lice be treated before attending school, more and more schools are allowing children to attend if they only have nits. Nits are not contagious, but when they hatch, they can be transmitted to another person. If a child has a case of lice, it will not go away on its own; the case must be treated.

When to go back to school after lice?

The answer to that depends on the follow-up plan that the person is using. All live lice should be removed from the hair before returning to school. If there are nits left in the head, they should be monitored and a post treatment protocol should be applied. As long as there are no live bugs and the person is using an effective follow-up, the child can return to school the day after treatment.

How to avoid lice at school?

If the children are old enough to understand, explain to them that while there is an outbreak of lice in the school, they should avoid hugging other children and putting their heads together. If the children are very young, such as those in a daycare center, we recommend that teachers keep kids separated during naps and try to manage their proximity at play time. Children with long hair should wear their hair up in a braid or bun and LiceDoctors offers a lice repellent spray that helps ward off lice. Head lice are very prevalent and contagious and you can only do your best; it is impossible to absolutely guarantee that head lice will never show up in your school, but you can take the aforementioned steps to minimize the risk.

HOW DOES IN-HOME LICE REMOVAL WORK?

  • Your expert lice technician will apply oil and methodically comb lice and eggs from the hair using professional grade comb.
  • She will then handpick any remaining nits (eggs) from the hair doing a thorough strand by strand check.
  • She will finish up with a final oil application and comb-through.   Expertise is the key; if you leave two nits in the hair, untreated, the case will start again.
  • She will go over basic after care instructions with you.
  • Your treatment is fully effective and safe for all ages and is backed with a 30 day guarantee
