Stockton School District

As follows, the Stockton school district does not have a “no nit” lice Policy which means that children with lice eggs may remain in school. Children with live bugs will be sent home.

“The Board of Trustees recognizes that head lice infestations do not pose a health hazard, are not a sign of uncleanliness, and are not responsible for the spread of any disease. The District is committed to maximizing student's academic performance and well being in a healthy and safe environment.

By the following the evidence-based recommendations of state and national health organizations, the policies and practices of the District will reduce embarrassment for students and anxiety for parents and school staff and will prevent unnecessary absences and the potential negative effects on academic performance.

The management of pediculosis should not disrupt the educational process. Children found with live head lice shall be referred to the parent for treatment and temporarily excluded from school. (Data does not support school exclusion for nits).

School employees shall report all suspected cases of head lice to the school nurse or designee as soon as possible. The nurse or designee shall examine the student and any siblings of affected students or members of the same household. If live lice are found, the parents of the student will be informed that the student will be excluded from attendance at the end of the school day. Parents/guardians shall be informed about recommended treatment procedures and sources of further information.

The Superintendent or designee shall send home the notification required by law for excluded students. (Education Code48213)”

Lodi Public Schools

As with Stockton schools, Lodi schools allow children with nits to remain in school, however, children with live lice will not be allowed to remain in school.

“The Board of Education believes that the district’s head lice management program should emphasize the correct diagnosis and treatment of head lice in order to minimize disruption of the education process and to reduce the number of student absences resulting from infestation.

School employees shall report all suspected cases of head lice to the school nurse or designee as soon as possible. If a student is found with active, adult head lice, he/she shall be excluded from attendance. The parent/guardian of an excluded student shall receive information about recommended treatment procedures and sources of further information. The student shall be allowed to return to school after treatment and shall be checked by the nurse or designee before returning to class.

When three or more students in any class have been identified as having a head lice infestation, all students in the class shall be examined. In consultation with the school nurse, the principal or designee may send information about head lice home to all parents/guardians of the students in that class.

Staff shall make every effort to maintain the privacy of students identified as having head lice and excluded for treatment.

Manteca Schools

Manteca schools have a more stringent lice policy in place than the two above school districts; Manteca schools have a “no nit” policy and all students with nits or live lice are not permitted in class.

“The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for the prevention and control of head lice in participants. At any time during program, staff may inspect any participant for head lice. If nits or lice are identified during inspection, the following procedure will be implemented:

  • Participant will be separated from the program and activities.
  • Parent/guardian will be called to come and pick up child.
  • Verbal instructions will be given to the parent/guardian before participant leaves site. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to follow these instructions and rid their child of lice so they may be readmitted to program.
  • After parent/guardian has completed treatment and ALL nits have been removed from the head, the child may return to program. Staff will inspect the child and, after clearance, the child will be permitted to return to program.

There is no specific exclusion me from program for head lice. Some parents/guardians are able to accomplish the treatment in one day. It should not take more than a few days. Manteca Parks and Recreation

Department staff are not responsible for the treatment or cost of supplies for the treating of head lice.” Source Manteca Parent Handbook
