Do girls Have Higher Incidence of Head Lice Removal than Boys?
The answer is yes. Lice want to be in close proximity to the scalp as the blood in the head is their food source. Lice feast on human blood three times a day. Without blood, lice will die within 24-36 hours. When a louse (bug) travels to another human host, its goal is to get to the scalp. Lice usually use hair as their ladder to the scalp. Naturally, the longer and more accessible the hair is, the easier it is for lice to climb toward the scalp.
In addition, long and thick hair allow lice the opportunity to nest at the scalp and remain undetected while laying up to 10 eggs a day for a month. Because girls usually have more hair on their heads than boys, the lice not only get into the hair more easily, but they can remain there longer before being detected. Since the eggs (nits) camouflage in the hair, when there is a lot of hair, it becomes more difficult to detect a case and once detected to remove all of the nits. When nits are left in the hair, the case perpetuates. Therefore, not only do girls have a higher incidence of head lice, but usually the cases that we treat in girls are more severe than the cases in boys.
The bottom line, though, is that anyone can get head lice and will need some kind of lice removal assistance. The good news is we will eliminate every case in your family. If you have found head lice on your kids, you have a better than 50% chance of having it as well. Not every one has symptoms. If you suspect or know that someone in your family has head lice, call in the professionals. LiceDoctors Head Lice Treatment and Nit Removal Service will be at your house the same day.
