Schools can vary in how they respond to head lice, even if they are near one another. Schools in Upper Darby do not hold to strict “no nit” policies, while schools in Havertown do have a “no nit” policy.

UPPER DARBY SCHOOLS

Students should stay home if any of these occur:

  • Fever(can return to school when fever free for 24 hours without medication)
  • Yellow or Green mucous draining from the nose or mouth
  • Excessive, uncontrollable coughing or wheezing
  • Diarrhea or blood in the stools in the last 24 hours
  • Vomiting in the last 24 hours
  • Conjuntivitis (pink eye), strep throat, ringworm, or any undiagnosed rash
  • Head Lice: students may return to school when appropriately treated and seen by the school nurse for re-entry

“If your child gets lice, please notify the nurse, your child may return to school after being treated.  The nurse will need to check your child's head to make sure he or she is lice free.  Please report to the nurses office upon return to school.”

6 days from the last crop of blisters

Scarlet Fever

24 hours from start of appropriate medication

Acute Contagious Conjunctivitis (pink eye)

Until judged non-infective by the school nurse or child's physician

Ringworm, all types

Until judged non-infective by the school nurse or child's physician

Impetigo

Until judged non-infective by the school nurse. Student must be nit free

Pediculosis capitis (head lice)

Until judged non-infective by the school nurse. Student must be nit free

Pediculosis corpora (body lice)

Until judged non-infective by the school nurse. Student must be nit free

Scabies

24 hours from the start of appropriate medication

Tonsillitis

24 hours from the start of appropriate medication

Trachoma (chronic contagious conjunctivitis)

24 hours from the start of appropriate medication
