A Day at the Beach… What's That in Your Hair? Betsy T. and her three young daughters in San Diego were having a lovely day at the beach. As the sun glistened off of the head of Betsy's middle daughter, Betsy thought she saw something move. Betsy moved in for a closer look and saw several little translucent things stuck to her daughter's hair close to the scalp. As her heart sank she asked her daughter if she had been itchy lately? Her daughter said, "no not at all". Betsy figured that it was just sand or some kind of junk in her daughters hair and dismissed her thoughts of lice. After all, she did not know what lice look like and what she knew about lice was that they make you feel itchy. The truth is that not everyone feels itchy from head lice. Some people seem to have no sensitivity to the little bug bites and can have lice for many months without realizing it. Just like with mosquito bites...some people feel very itchy while others do not. A couple of weeks later when Betsy was reading to her daughters she had an "oh no!" moment. All three of her daughters had these little things stuck to their hair. At this point she realized what she had failed to understand at the beach, her daughters were infested with head lice. You may ask how could she have failed to recognize head lice and nits when she saw the case two weeks prior at the beach? The reality is most people do not know what lice or nits (the eggs) look like. Many people assume that nits are white when in fact they are a clear shell with a little brown bug inside. If one is not very experienced with head lice it is very easy to misdiagnose a case. After all, if you have never seen it before, how can you know what to look for?
