We all look forward to the relaxing days of summer. So who wants to get a call from the camp nurse alerting us that our young camper has head lice?

What Can You Do to Protect Your Child From Summer Lice?

Before you pack your child up for summer camp, day camp or sleep away, or before he or she goes on a play date, or goes to the swimming pool, there are a few things you can do to minimize the chances of him or her giving or getting a case of head lice.

  1. As long as it's not raining, bring your child outside where the light is brightest and take a good look at the scalp. Do this at least once a week if not more often. Keep a lookout for translucent eggs that will reflect the sun and are close to the scalp. If you find them stuck to the hair within a quarter of an inch of the scalp, you have an active infestation on your hands.

  2. To prevent a case, if your child is lice-free, pull long hair up into a bun or braid. Keeping the hair tidy and contained makes it less likely that a louse will find it and commence an infestation on your child's head.

  3. Apply gel or mousse to the hair or even better use LiceDoctors Lice Repellent Spray ( It is important to put a protective layer around the hair to make it more difficult for the lice claws to grab hold of the hair. These products help to repel lice. The LiceDoctors Lice Repellent Spray has the added advantage of having a peppermint spray which head lice want to avoid.

  4. Do not think that chlorine will kill head lice. Chlorine and swimming pools have no effect on head lice.

  5. Have a chat with your children. Explain to them that head lice are very common and that the way that they can get it is by getting very close physically to a friend. If there is an outbreak at camp, they should not hug their friends.

  6. While almost every case of head lice is contracted through head to head contact, there is a slight chance of getting lice through an object like a comb, towel, or cap. Advise your child not to share those items.
