Lice need very little hair to stay on the scalp. Unless you shave the head to bald, lice will remain there. Here LiceDoctors technician, Sean, gives us an example:
Recently, I received a call from a frantic mom who just didn’t know what to do. She had 4 kids, 3 girls and 1 boy, who had been fighting lice for months. Unfortunately and unfairly, they had developed a reputation at school as being the dirty kids and mom was at her wit’s end.
Finally the school nurse recommended that she have them professionally treated and handed her one of our flyers that we pass out to the school nurses. The mom called us and scheduled an appointment for that day because the school was not going to allow the kids back in school until they were 100% clear of lice and eggs.
The father had shaved his son’s head in order to save time. When I got there I started on the girls and when I got to the son, I had my work cut out for me.
The son had the most severe case of lice and nits that I’ve seen in a long time. What most people don’t realize is that the lice lay the eggs right against the scalp, just about a quarter of an inch or less away. By shaving the hair, he didn’t get rid of any eggs or lice since they live on the scalp and there was enough hair left for the lice to cling to and the eggs to attach to. But what it did do is make it take longer for me because I had no way to manipulate the hair by grabbing it and moving it to make it easier to grab and pick any remaining nits after we comb the hair in the beginning.
I also wouldn’t recommend shaving a 13 year old girl’s hair but I’ve actually seen that happen once in the 3 years I’ve worked for LiceDoctors. It may have scarred that little girl for life.
So I guess the moral would be when it comes to shaving the head to eliminate lice, I don’t recommend it. It would be better to leave the work to us. And just don’t shave a young girl’s hair. Give us a chance to fix it first. No case is too big for us to fix no matter how bad it is.
