Rialto and Redlands School Head Lice Policies

The lice policies for both Rialto and Redlands schools are counter to the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses both of which allow for children who still have nits, but have been treated, to return to school. Children in these districts with live lice or signs of nits will not be admitted to school.

Rialto Schools

School employees shall report all suspected cases of head lice and or nits to the school nurse or designee as soon as possible. The nurse or designee shall examine the student and any siblings of affected students or members of the same household. If nits or live lice are found, the student shall be excluded immediately and parents/guardians informed about recommended treatment procedures, ways to check the hair, and sources of further information.

The principal or the Superintendent's designee may, at his/her discretion, notify parents/guardians of students in that class or school and provide them with information about the detection and treatment of head lice and or nits.

If there are more than 20% of the students in any one classroom affected, all students in the class shall be examined.

Excluded students may return to school when they are re-examined by the nurse or health clerk and it is determined that the student has no live head lice, or untreated nits.

 public schools

To prevent the spread of head lice infestations, school employees shall report all suspected cases of head lice to the school nurse/designee as soon as possible. The nurse/designee shall examine the student and any siblings of affected students or members of the same household. If nits or lice are found, the student shall be excluded from attendance and parents/guardians informed about recommended treatment procedures and sources of further information.

The Superintendent or designee shall send home the notification required by law for excluded students.

If there are two or more students affected in any class, all students in the class shall be examined, and information about head lice shall be sent home to all parents/guardians of those students.

Staff shall maintain the privacy of students identified as having head lice and excluded from attendance.

Excluded students may return to school when:

  1. They bring a note from the parent/guardian verifying treatment; and
  2. Reexamination by the nurse or designee shows that all nits and lice have been removed.

Vacaville School Head Lice Policy

Vacaville Schools do not implement a “no-nit” policy. If a student is found with active, adult head lice, he/she may be allowed to stay in school until the end of the school day. The parent/guardian of any such student shall be given information about the treatment of head lice and encouraged to begin treatment of the student immediately and to check all members of the family.
