At LiceDoctors, we receive many questions each day about head lice. There is much conflicting information on line and you may not know where to turn with questions. Below are some commonly asked lice questions with answers from Dr. Beck based on over 20 years of experience:
1. Do the chemical lice treatments work?
Answer: Chemical lice shampoos are largely ineffective as bugs continue to mutate and become resistant. Major university studies show that resistant lice (called “super lice”) are present in almost every state in the U.S.
2. My kids are clean, why did they get lice?
Answer: Ironically, head lice find it easier to attach to clean hair than dirty (oily) hair. Good hygiene does not prevent head lice. As long as there is hair for a louse to climb onto, there is risk of getting head lice.
3. Do I need to alert my child’s friends?
Answer: We recommend it. Head lice are so abundant today and afflict millions of children and their families. If your child has it, chances are that she or he picked it up from a friend. In order to break the cycle of friends passing it around, it is advisable to alert friends (some of whom may have it and be unaware) so that everyone can be treated. The last thing that you want is for us to get rid of the lice on your child, and then have that child re-exposed down the road.
4. How is a professional lice treatment service helpful?
Answer: It is challenging to find small eggs and fleeting bugs in the hair, if you do not have plenty of experience doing so. Lice have been around for millions of years because they are hearty and they have strong camouflage properties. If a couple of tiny bugs are left behind, then the infestation has not been eliminated. LiceDoctors has the experience, expertise, and tools to find and conquer all lice and their eggs.
