Schools in close proximity can vary widely in their treatment criteria for head lice. Bolingbrook Schools are in alignment with current practices advised by the CDC and NASN, while Oak Lawn schools retain “no nit” policies at this time. As always, we recommend checking with your child’s school health services department to know the most up to date policy.
“Indian Prairie School District’s policy reflects standard practice as recommended by the Center for Disease Control, American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of School Nurses, and the Harvard School of Public Health. These organizations recommend that the management of pediculosis should not disrupt the educational process or create unnecessary absenteeism. When lice/nits are found on a child at school, that child’s parent/guardian will be informed. The child will be picked up from school by the parent. Once the child is treated for lice, the child may return to school with proof of treatment. Proof of treatment may be in the form of a physician statement, receipt for the product used, or the box top from the product used. The child will then be readmitted to class. The child will typically be back in class the next morning.”

OAK LAWN SCHOOLS
“The school will observe the following procedures regarding head lice.
Parents are required to notify the school nurse if they suspect their child has head lice. The school will provide written instructions to parent or guardian regarding appropriate treatment for the infestation.
A student excluded because of head lice will be permitted to return to school only when the parent or guardian brings the student to school to be checked by the school nurse or building principal and the child is determined to be free of the head lice and eggs (nits). Infested children are prohibited from riding the bus to school to be checked for head lice.”
