“What’s the first thing you think of when you hear that your child has lice? PARTY! … Right? That’s what one mother in Nashville did: invited me, ordered pizza, and invited every child in her daughter’s class to come over to get checked for lice. She had a great magnifier so we all got to see what lice looked like, at every stage. Of the five children who showed up, all five had lice, plus one mother.”

Clients Helping With Lice Removal Technology

Or how about this positive report from one of our Nashville technicians: “One of my clients introduced me to a great magnifier. I went right home and ordered one. Now I take it on my jobs and most children, 6-year-old girls in particular, want to see everything that comes off their heads. They think the lice babies are cute! The rest of the family may be grossed out, but who knows, maybe they have a budding entomologist on their hands!”

How Laura Loves What She Does

Memphis LiceDoctors technician, Laura, tells us that she loves what she does “because I am doing a great service for ‘my’ distraught families”

Whether you live in the Nashville area or in Memphis or Knoxville Tennessee, one of our LiceDoctor technicians will come to your home and will turn a negative experience into a positive one. We realize that no one wants to have lice, but the experience doesn’t not have to be traumatic. Once you contact LiceDoctors you can have confidence that as soon as we leave your house, you will not be contagious and that any arduous work or failed attempts at getting rid of those creepy critters and their sticky eggs is behind you.
As Detroit and surrounding areas begin to thaw out after the winter, head lice are beginning to make a more evident appearance. In some schools occasional cases are cropping up, while other schools are dealing with full-blown outbreaks. In one elementary school, recently, so many cases were discovered in multiple grades that the principal called us and asked us to come into the school to help them identify cases and deal with this outbreak. It can be quite overwhelming when a school discovers several children with head lice at one time.

Lice Eradicated From one Child, Another Infested

Like the old game Whac-A-Mole, just as one child eradicates the case another one shows up infested. With increasing numbers of schools eliminating the “no nit” policy, more children may be coming to school and passing lice on to their classmates. In addition, since the chemical treatments often fail to work, increasingly children come to school post-treatment and within a few days they are contagious again.

Cleaning The Classroom Not The Answer

The problem is not in the classroom itself, but rather in the heads of the students. It is important to note that lice only live off of the head for a day so cleaning the classroom is not the answer. When a school is under siege from a head lice outbreak, the best way to eradicate the lice is to have everybody professionally checked and then given a treatment plan that works.

Tennessee School Head Lice Policy | Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville

As with other states we have looked at, Tennessee’s school head lice policies vary by districts. This translates to schools in Nashville and Memphis areas having “no nit” policies, while the eastern part of the state, in the Knoxville area, has changed and no longer has a “no nit” policy.

Nashville School Lice Policy

The Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools System has a “no nit” policy.” Children with lice or nits may not attend school. Before a student can be re-admitted to school, a statement of treatment from a health care provider must be submitted. Parents will be allowed three (3) days to rid their child(ren) of head lice.” It is unclear what happens if the children are not lice-free within the stipulated three days.

Memphis School Lice Policy

Consistent with the Nashville schools head lice policy, schools in Memphis, Tennessee stipulate that “Students may not attend school with head lice. If we find a child with lice, the child will be sent home until the child has been treated … and there are no nits (eggs) in sight. When a case of head lice is reported all students in that child’s class will be checked for head lice. All students with head lice must go home. The office must check all students who have head lice before they are allowed to return to school. Parents please bring your child in to the office and make sure he/she is cleared before you leave. While lice are not life threatening, we must be aggressive in dealing with the problem.”

Knoxville School Lice Policy

Knoxville schools take a different approach to the head lice problem. The Knoxville School Sentinel reports that: “There’s no medical or social reason to exclude kids with head lice. It sends a negative message. And it could have a negative effect on attendance,” said Lisa Wagoner, supervisor of health services for Knox County Schools, which revised its lice procedures during the 2008-2009 school year. In Knox County, children are no longer automatically sent home for head lice, although they are allowed to leave if that’s what the parent wants to do. The rest of the class is not warned with a letter home unless there are multiple infestations, nor are they routinely screened.”No, we don’t do that anymore,” says Wagoner, “because if we’re not sending anybody home, there’s no reason to screen everyone.”

The article continues, “Instead, the procedures stress prevention: Keeping kids from sharing hats and clothes, preventing head-to-head contact, and encouraging parents to screen their own children. “The most effective screening is done by a parent,” the guidelines say.Wagoner points out that head lice don’t spread diseases, and that infestations are usually several weeks old before they’re detected anyway.Any absences resulting from head lice after 24 hours are considered unexcused.Knox County’s guidelines follow those of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But not all health experts agree on this approach.

What Should Your Family Policy Be?

The National Pediculosis Association recommends an even more stringent “nit-free” policy for children returning to school after a lice infestation, according to its Web site, www.headlice.org. The association says that because head lice are becoming resistant to insecticide shampoos. It’s important to remove any remaining nits with a special fine-toothed comb before letting a child return to school.”

The issue of head lice prevention is very divisive. Schools weigh the risks of increasing the spread of head lice without “no nit” policies against the risk of students missing too much school. For more specific information, call your local school to find out what your school head lice policy is in Tennessee.

PA School Lice Policy | Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and More

According to Pennsylvania schools State Code, Section 27.71 states that “a child or staff person can be excluded from school who is suspected by a physician or the school nurse of having Pediculosis Capitis(head lice)” (Chapter 27, 28 PA Code). The school nurse or physician decides on readmission to school based upon the school’s policy or specified criteria. The student or staff member can be readmitted immediately after treatment and should be reexamined by the school nurse or other specified health care practitioner seven days after the initial treatment (Chapter 2 Pa state gov policy).”

Stephanie and happy clients in Philadelphia

Children With Lice Excluded At Nurses Discretion

Basically, this means that children with head lice and/or nits may be excluded from school at the discretion of the school nurse. This ambiguous policy leads to a great variation in head lice policy from district to district, depending on the point of view of the administration or heath care professionals within a district or even within a school.

Philadelphia School Lice Policy

In Philadelphia, the policy relies on aforementioned state code, “… 27.71 (11) specifically relates to head lice and provides for exclusion of students from school (public, private, parochial, Sunday, or other school or college or preschool) who have been diagnosed by a physician or are suspected of having pediculosis by the school nurse. As per Pennsylvania school code 27.71 (11) the student shall be allowed to return to either the school, childcare or other group setting immediately after first treatment. Readmission to class shall be contingent upon reexamination by the school nurse”. The Philadelphia head lice policy gives the following caveat, which suggests that the city schools are taking a more lenient approach to head lice in the schools and often do not adhere to a “no nits policy”: “Please note the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses discourage “No Nit policies” because no child should miss unnecessary school time due to head lice.”

Bala Cynwyd School Lice Policy

Nearby Bala Cynwyd has a stricter head lice policy: “Our School has a No-Nits policy. If your child has head lice, we ask that your child stay home until his or her head is completely clear of nits (eggs). The School has on-hand a number of education supplies and resources to help you treat head lice, but because of the nature of the early childhood teaching environment, we have always found a No-Nits policy to be the most effective way of controlling head lice outbreaks. Pupils may return after adequate and effective therapy, but they must be examined by School Health Services prior to re admission.” Philadelphia suburb, Upper Darby also has an absolute “no nits policy”: “Children with head lice will be excluded from school until the hair has been treated and ALL of the eggs (nits) have been removed.”

Pittsburgh School Lice Policy

In Pittsburgh, there is also variation in the head lice policy among schools. While many schools leave the policy decision to the school principal, the Pittsburgh Public Schools Early Childhood Education Center has a “no nits policy” calling for children with head lice to be removed from school. “A child can return to the classroom after receiving treatment and no nits are in the hair.”

Conversely in the Brentwood Borough school district of Pittsburgh, “Child is to be sent home early only if live (crawling) head lice are detected. Otherwise, child my finish the school day…children may return to school the next day (after treatment)… it is not necessary that the child be entirely “nit-free” to return to school, but if live lice remain, the child will be sent home.”

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that you must inquire of the school what the head lice policy is. If you find that your child has head lice, bring in the professionals so that child may return to school the next day without fear of re-infesting other children or being denied entry to school.

The Lice Diaries by LiceDoctors Volume 6 Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA

As winter comes to an end and students all over Pennsylvania take a break from school and enjoy their spring breaks, an unintended side effect occurs: we see a jump in the number of head lice cases. Spring break brings an increased number of play dates, family vacations, and group outings and activities. While all of this is lots of fun, it also means that children are in closer contact, in informal settings, and are therefore more likely to experience close head-to-head contact. Since head-to-head contact is the primary way to transfer head lice from person-to-person, if one person has a case, by the end of the week he or she may have shared that with several people. Add to that the start of softball and baseball season, with the sharing of helmets, as well as the warming weather, and you have the formula for an upswing in the incidence of head lice.

Feeling Like I Have To Keep Kids In Bubble

As LiceDoctors client, Elissa C. from Bala Cynwyd told us, “I feel like I need to put my kids in a bubble going forward. Every time we return from spring break, we end up dealing with head lice. If we make it through the spring vacation lice-free then my son starts Little League and invariably picks up a case there.” Since the reality is that head lice are a part of life, all you can do is understand the basic facts of lice and know when it’s time to call in an expert. Understand that not everybody who has head lice itches so do routine checks on your children. You are looking for translucent eggs with brown bugs inside that are stuck to the hair. To truly eradicate a case of head lice, you must remove every single nit from the hair. Since that can be a daunting task, you may very well benefit from the expertise of an expert.

Manually Removing Lice By Hand A Difficult Task

Angela D. from Pittsburgh was confident that she could remove all of the lice herself. After all she reasoned, she is a scientist and is accustomed to looking at very small specimens. In addition, she is very methodical and determined. After three weeks of diligently treating her children’s heads, She was still finding nits in the hair. When she called us she was literally in tears. “As a scientist, I underestimated how formidable this enemy was. It took a while for me to realize that I needed help. Once I saw that I could not do this task myself, I turned my intensity to finding the best professional service around. That search led me to LiceDoctors. Everything about their protocol made sense to me. They came, they worked, they conquered.”

“We have head lice. What do I need to do to the home?”
Nancy W. Westchester, NY

One of the most common questions we are asked from Westchester families with head lice is, “what should I be doing about lice in the house?” People want to know if they should bag toys, wash every item in the house, and throw out all brushes and hair clips. The answer to all of those questions is a resounding NO.

Lice are parasites, biting the host and feasting on blood from the head 3 times daily. Without the blood from its host, a louse will die within 24 hours. That is why we always tell families that “it’s the head not the house” that you need to take care of when it comes to head lice. Head lice only reside in the head and will not travel to other body parts because they need the temperature of the head. Dogs and cats can not carry head lice.

Lice Do Not Like To Leave Food Supply

Lice in the house do not like to leave their food supply and travel to a sofa or a toy. Most transfers of lice occur with head to head contact as the lice move to another source of food. It is not that common to find lice in the house in carpets or sofas. When LiceDoctors treats a family in Westchester, we come to your house and we comb through the hair using oil and a professional comb. We then hand pick the remaining nits and you will sleep with oil in the hair that night. If there are any lice in the house and they try to get back into the head they will die. Remember if lice remain in the house for about 24 hours, they will die without blood.

Getting Rid Of Lice Can Be Frustrating Process

Eliminating lice can be a frustrating process. LiceDoctors comes to the homes of families with head lice and we promise that we will eliminate the lice and nits in your head. We offer a 100% guarantee based on 17 years of experience treating head lice.

“My daughters have missed 3 days of school due to head lice. I have treated them twice with Rid and combed and combed and there are still live bugs in their heads. If you come to my house and treat them will they be able to get back into school tomorrow?” Cathy R. Staten Island, NY

“Thank you so much to all of you at LiceDoctors. I thought that my daughter was going to miss her final exams. The nurse at her school insisted that there were bugs in her hair. As soon as LiceDoctors treated her, the nurse checked and let her in immediately. This was the best money I ever spent.” Mary Anne D. Queens, NY

New York City Children Allowed Back In School After Treatment

We at LiceDoctors are often asked by parents in New York City what exactly is the New York City school lice policy and whether their children will be allowed into school the day after head lice treatment. The answer is: yes, children are admitted into school the day after we treat them for head lice and nits. In 2007, the NYC Department of Health/Department of Education School Health implemented a Head Lice Policy that allows students with nits in school. According to School Health, “Head lice are commonly found in children 3-12 years of age. While head lice may be unsightly and embarrassing, head lice do not pose a health hazard, do not transmit disease and are not a sign of uncleanliness.

The best way to prevent unwanted spread of head lice is through prompt treatment. Studies have shown that school-wide screenings for nits is time-consuming, costly and more often than not forces children to miss school unnecessarily because evidence of nits does not mean head lice infection. Children with nits may stay at school but children with live lice are not admitted until there are no live bugs.Under the new policy children with nits will be re-examined in 10-14 days to see if there are lice”. This head lice policy applies to schools all over New York City including in Staten Island, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn.

Policies Varied Outside Of Manhattan and the Boroughs

The head lice policies outside of Manhattan and the boroughs are more varied. According to Kenneth Hawkins of the Long Island New York Attendance Teachers Association, “students shouldn’t miss more than one day of school because of head lice but often miss four or five days.” For example in Great Neck, NY, the policy states that at the nurse’s discretion, children with live lice and a lot of nits should be sent home. Presumably, children with a few nits can remain in school.

Pros and Cons of No Nit Policy

There are pros and cons to the abolition of the “no nit” policy: ask any New York City school nurse about lice and school. It is true that head lice in NY is a leading cause of absenteeism and that by the time the case of lice is discovered it has usually been in the head for a few weeks. During this time, the student has been around other students thereby having ample opportunity to pass along the lice in school. Alternatively, for parents who actually eradicate lice in their child’s head, it can be unnerving knowing that a child with nits is allowed in the classroom. Keep in mind that nits are not contagious—only live bugs are. Having your child professionally treated with an in-home lice treatment company, implementing a follow-up plan, and then using gel, mousse, or spray on the hair is the best way to keep your child lice-free no matter what the other children in the class do.
