Setting Guidelines For Playdates To Prevent Spread of Head Lice
“How do I know where to draw the line when my children get together with friends? I don’t want to be a policewoman always checking up on them, but I live in fear that one of my children’s friends will bring lice into the house. My daughter went to a friend’s house and she came home and told me that they styled each other’s hair. I hit the roof. ‘What if she has head lice?”I shouted. Then last week I walked into the den and saw my son and his best friend practically sitting on top of each other playing a video game intensely. They were oblivious to the fact that their heads were touching. I need help in determining guidelines to help prevent the spread of head lice in case one of these kids has it, but I need to keep myself in check as I am driving my kids and myself crazy. Where do I draw the line?” This call came in from a mom in Ventura County, California last week. What’s a mother to do?
We empathize with this Ventura mom. She had been through lice a couple of years ago and tried to tackle it on her own. The experience traumatized her. Ever since then she has lived in fear that she will have to go through this experience again. First of all, in the event that one of her kids gets head lice, she need not suffer the way she did before. LiceDoctors provides in-home, professional lice treatment service that makes the experience very easy. LiceDoctors technicians have successfully treated well over 200,000 children and adults. If her kids get lice the LiceDoctors can help her as well. As we were talking this mom started to relax. She realized that lice are not that difficult to treat for an experienced technician and that she would not be alone this time. For many, that takes a load off their minds just knowing that we will be there if they need us at their home at their convenience.
The truth is, that lice are so prevalent now that it is almost impossible to protect your child from getting head lice. We do suggest that if a child is going on a play date, it is a good idea to spray either a lice repellent into her hair or else use hairspray, gel or mousse, all of which provide a protective covering over the hair. This makes it harder for lice to get into the hair. If there is an outbreak of lice in your child’s grade, it is reasonable for you to take a quick look at a friend and your own child before a play date to be sure that neither is carrying bugs. If that is awkward then just check your child before and after the play date. The best way to do that is to bring the child over to a bright window or put her under a lamp. If she has picked up a bug, it can be a bit difficult to see it as when the hair is moved the lice move very quickly and you have to be extremely attentive.
You definitely should never put chemicals in the hair preventatively, nor do we recommend that you use them on an active case. First of all, lice have mutated and are resistant to many chemicals. Second, chemicals never work preventatively. Third, chemicals do not absorb into the egg so they cannot kill the nymph (baby bug) that is inside. As soon as that egg hatches the baby bug will come out and the case will continue.
When it comes to play dates it is impossible to prevent young children from putting their heads together. Unless you turn them into robots, it is unlikely that little children will remember to be mindful and not get close to their friends. As they get older though it is reasonable to remind them to not get put their head next to someone else’s head. For example, hairstyling parties should be discouraged and video game playing can be done with the kids sitting several inches apart from each other.
If your kids are old enough to listen to you on this subject, encourage them to keep a little distance, particularly when there are infestations going around their school. There’s no need to lose your cool though because head lice are a common occurrence in this country today. Head lice is the second leading cause of school absenteeism after the common cold. They are annoying, but they do not cause disease. Also, if your child gets lice it does not mean that you are falling short in the hygiene department. Head lice actually prefer clean hair to dirty hair as it is harder for them to attach to hair that has oil on it.
To sum up, there are some precautions that you can take before your kids go to a play date and after they return. We would suggest that you follow the ones that we mentioned above. Secondly, keep in mind that there are solutions like LiceDoctors that you can use if your kids get lice and this will make your experience far more pleasant and successful. Third, if your kids are old enough to listen to you, give them some advice to help them to remember not to put their heads right next to a friend. Fourth, take some deep breaths, relax, and remember that there is help for this and that in today’s world it just comes with being a parent.
